Satan Cast out of Heaven

Recognize the Attacks of Satan

As I prepared myself for the weekly meeting of The Knights of the Round Table, an intense bible study group, I was reading Genesis 3:1-7. We all know the story of the serpent and Eve, and the forbidden fruit, but I began to ponder ‘what made Eve decide to risk death’? She was told, probably by Adam, that she would die if she eats of it, so you can’t say she didn’t know [Genesis 3:3]. For days I meditated on this, and in trying to put myself in her place, to better understand her thinking (risking life, and forfeiting paradise), my mind was lead down paths that I now know is 1. Not important (we don’t always have to know why), and 2. No one person can fully know the mind of another. Only God knows our minds and hearts and I gladly leave this in His more than capable hands!

What is important is how the enemy got Eve to risk it all. John 10:10 tells us that “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy;” and this was his mission on this particular day. See, through Satan’s envy, jealousy, and pride, he hates God and wants to destroy what God loves. . .that would be you & me. In Matthew 13:44-46 Jesus tells a story of what the kingdom of heaven is like. In this parable he talks of a treasure (you & I) that is hidden in the field (the world). The man (God) was so over joyed at finding it that he hid it in the field (could mean protected) again and went and sold all that he had (Jesus’s death) so that he could buy that field. And so you see, we are God’s most treasured possession! A pearl of great price! He sold everything He had to purchase us! He loves us that much!

In the beginning, before the creation of the world, Satan was a guardian cherub. And, not just any guardian cherub but by Ezekiel’s description he had the seal of perfection [Ezekiel 28:11-19], and the ear of God [v 14]! But his greed became so large that he wanted to be God! It’s ok to be ‘like’ God, after all this is what we are to strive for (to have all the characteristics of our Father), but we will never be God. Like a spoiled child, when Satan didn’t get his way and was cast down, he has tried to destroy everything God loves. How does he do this? The same way he has been doing it since the garden of Eden. . .it starts with doubt.

I couldn’t understand why Eve did what she did, after all isn’t wishing she hadn’t partaken of the forbidden fruit what most of us has thought of at one point or another? But then the Holy Spirit lead me to these 4 little words “Did God really say,” [Genesis 3:1]. Doubting what God says, without taking our doubts to him or trusting in what He says, will get you in trouble every time! That is just the beginning of a very slippery sloop friend. It is also the first sign of an attack from the enemy. Genesis 3:1 tells us the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals, and Ezekiel 28:12 says Satan was full of wisdom. Another thing we know about Satan is that he will attack you when you are at your weakest [Matthew 4:11], and will use those that we least expect (Matthew 16:23). This is why Paul said to the church of Ephesus to put on the full armor of God [Ephesians 6:10-18]. Without it we become more venerable!

Some of us are not as quick to recognize the first sign of attack, after all it is done very subtle, and like Eve we find ourselves considering what the enemy has whispered in our ear (serpent in Hebrew means: meant to hiss; also, meant to whisper). We have to be careful as to what our minds dwell on for what our minds dwell on is what our hearts will follow. This is why Paul told the church in Philippi: “And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise [Philippians 4:8]. I know from my addiction, that once I considered getting high. . .it was going to happen! Guard your minds! It still wasn’t too late for Eve and mankind at this point, all she had to do was stand firm and not compromise (rebuke the devil) or RUN! CALL OUT TO GOD, BUT RUN!!!!!!

One last thing. We don’t know who told Eve that they could eat from any tree in the garden but the tree of knowledge of good and evil, but we see the effect of what happens when we change the wording of what God says. Eve added to Gods command and made it seem too strict. By making Gods word too strict it makes God out to be something He’s not – mean, and by making His word to liberal then you are portraying Him as less than a just God. Example:

• Too Strict – Have you ever been on a diet? What about one that restricts you from certain foods? If you answered yes, then you know you have been set up to fail because this is all you can think about (something you can’t have). What God said was “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.” In effect what God was saying was, you can eat from any tree in the garden, but the tree of the knowledge of good and evil is poisonous and will kill you if you eat from it. He didn’t say not to, He just warned them as to what would happen if they did.

• Too Liberal – Christian Gay’s. Need I say more. They have twisted the bible to suit their life style. I believe it’s what is referred to as “itchy ears” “For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear [2 Timothy 4:3]”

WARNING: “I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this scroll: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to that person the plagues described in this scroll. And if anyone takes words away from this scroll of prophecy, God will take away from that person any share in the tree of life and in the Holy City, which are described in this scroll. “ Revelation 22:18-19

Armor of God
Therefore, put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. Ephesians 6:13-18

Satan – Know Your Enemy

Ezekiel had prophesied against the city of Tyre. Here he focused his prophecy on Tyre’s leader. The chief sin of Tyre’s king was pride. . .believing himself to be a god. But Ezekiel also may have made a broader spiritual application, speaking about the spiritual king of Tyre. Satan, whom the people were really following.

Ezekiel 28:12-29 NIV

“Son of man, take up a lament concerning the king of Tyre and say to him: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:
“‘You were the seal of perfection,
full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
You were in Eden,
the garden of God;
every precious stone adorned you:
carnelian, chrysotile and emerald,
topaz, onyx and jasper,
lapis lazuli, turquoise and beryl.
Your settings and mountings were made of gold;
on the day you were created they were prepared.
You were anointed as a guardian cherub,
for so I ordained you.
You were on the holy mount of God;
you walked among the fiery stones.
You were blameless in your ways
from the day you were created
till wickedness was found in you.
Through your widespread trade
you were filled with violence,
and you sinned.
So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God,
and I expelled you, guardian cherub,
from among the fiery stones.
Your heart became proud
on account of your beauty,
and you corrupted your wisdom
because of your splendor.
So I threw you to the earth;
I made a spectacle of you before kings.
By your many sins and dishonest trade
you have desecrated your sanctuaries.
So I made a fire come out from you,
and it consumed you,
and I reduced you to ashes on the ground
in the sight of all who were watching.
All the nations who knew you
are appalled at you;
you have come to a horrible end
and will be no more.’”
